The 1953 British Mount Everest Expedition

First to the summit. On May 29, 1953, climbers Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay reached the peak of Mount Everest, becoming the first people ever confirmed to have made it to the top of the world's highest mountain.

Led by Colonel Hunt. The expedition was led by Colonel John Hunt and organized by the Joint Himalayan Committee. The whole team worked together to help Hillary and Norgay reach their goal.

Perfect timing for the Queen. News of the triumph reached London on June 2, 1953, which was the exact day Queen Elizabeth II was being crowned. The announcement made the coronation celebration even more special for Britain.

Ninth attempt overall. This wasn't the first try to climb Everest, but the ninth expedition to attempt it. The previous eight teams had all turned back before reaching the summit.

A worldwide moment. The successful climb captured the imagination of people everywhere and showed that with preparation, teamwork, and determination, even the most impossible-seeming goals could be achieved.
