Cosmic spiral. An accretion disk forms when gas and dust orbit around a massive object like a star or black hole. The material gradually spirals inward instead of staying in a stable orbit, kind of like water going down a drain.
Heating and glowing. As material spirals inward, friction and gravity squeeze it harder and harder, making it extremely hot. This heat causes the disk to glow brightly with radiation that we can detect from Earth.
Different colors of light. The type of light an accretion disk gives off depends on how massive the central object is. Disks around young stars glow in infrared, while disks around neutron stars or black holes shine in powerful X-rays.
Invisible forces at work. Friction, uneven heat, and magnetic effects all push and pull on the orbiting material, making it unstable. These forces work together to pull material gradually toward the center.
Studying disk wobbles. Scientists can listen to how accretion disks vibrate and oscillate, kind of like studying the wobbles in a spinning plate. This science is called diskoseismology and helps us understand what is happening in these extreme environments.
