Counting down days. An Advent calendar helps you count the days from December 1st (or the first Sunday before Christmas) all the way until Christmas Day on December 25th.

Daily surprises. Each day you open a little door, window, or flap to find a small treat, chocolate, toy, or picture inside.

German tradition. The word "Advent" comes from German, and Advent calendars started in Germany as a way to help children wait patiently for Christmas.

Reusable treasures. Many Advent calendars are made from paper or wood so families can use the same calendar year after year, filling it with new surprises each December.

Variable start dates. Since the First Sunday of Advent falls between November 27 and December 3, some calendars start on different dates depending on when that Sunday happens.
