Cool Facts
Planting changed everything. About 11,500 years ago, people stopped just gathering wild grains and started deliberately planting crops. This was revolutionary because it meant people could stay in one place and grow their own food instead of always moving around hunting and gathering.
Animals got domesticated. Around 10,000 years ago, humans tamed sheep, goats, pigs, and cattle to raise for food and materials. These domestic animals became reliable sources of meat, milk, and wool instead of having to hunt wild animals.
Agriculture built cities. When farms produced extra food beyond what farmers needed, they could trade the surplus with others. This meant people could specialize in different jobs like building, crafting, or teaching instead of everyone needing to farm, which allowed cities to grow.
Started in many places. Plants weren't domesticated just once. People in at least 11 different regions around the world independently figured out farming, which means many civilizations came up with this idea on their own.
Modern mega-farms. In the 1900s, agriculture changed again when large farms started growing just one type of crop in huge amounts. This industrial farming made food cheaper and more abundant, though it changed how farming works today.
