Invented the mobile. Calder created sculptures that hang in the air and move gently with wind and air currents. Unlike statues that stay still, his mobiles are constantly changing shape and shadow, making them feel alive.

Balanced art on purpose. He designed his mobiles so they would balance perfectly and spin gracefully. Each piece had to be carefully calculated so that even tiny changes in weight would affect how it moved.

Created stable sculptures too. Calder also made massive sculptures called "stabiles" that stay completely still. These large metal structures often looked like giant animals or shapes and were placed in public spaces for everyone to enjoy.

Came from artist family. Both his father and grandfather were sculptors too, so art ran deep in the Calder family. Alexander grew up surrounded by creativity and followed in their footsteps.

Kept his mystery alive. Calder didn't like explaining what his art meant or how to think about it. He believed people should experience his work themselves without theories getting in the way.
