Cool Facts
Borrowed and improved.. Romans looked at Greek buildings and loved their style, but then invented their own methods to make buildings bigger, stronger, and more impressive. They combined Greek beauty with Roman engineering genius.
Concrete game-changer.. The Romans invented a special concrete that actually got stronger over time and could last for centuries. This material let them build massive structures that regular stone alone could never create.
Arches everywhere.. Instead of just stacking stone straight up like the Greeks did, Romans figured out the arch and dome. These curved shapes distributed weight brilliantly and let them span huge open spaces without support in the middle.
Built to last.. Roman engineers were obsessed with making things work and endure. Many of their buildings, roads, and aqueducts are still standing and some are still being used today, more than 2,000 years after they were built.
Across the empire.. As Rome conquered new lands, they brought their architecture everywhere. You can still find Roman ruins and structures scattered across Europe, North Africa, and the Middle East.
