Moon lander spacecraft. The Apollo Lunar Module, or LEM, was the special spacecraft that carried astronauts from orbit down to the Moon's surface and back up again. It was the first crewed vehicle ever to land anywhere beyond Earth.

Built for space only. This spacecraft was the first crewed vehicle designed to work exclusively in space, meaning it never had to fly through Earth's atmosphere or land on Earth. It was built tough enough for the Moon's harsh environment but didn't need heat shields or wings.

Two-part design. The Lunar Module had two sections: the descent stage that stayed on the Moon, and the ascent stage that carried the astronauts back to orbit. This clever design meant they didn't have to carry the extra weight of the descent engine all the way home.

Advanced technology. The module used computers, thrusters, and special landing legs to touch down safely on the Moon's surface. It was one of the most complex machines ever built at the time, and it worked perfectly on every Apollo moon landing.
