Medieval kingdom. During the Middle Ages, Aquitaine was a powerful kingdom and duchy whose borders changed many times as different rulers took control. It was an important territory that many powerful people wanted to govern.

Atlantic coastline. Aquitaine sits right along the Atlantic Ocean in the southwestern corner of France. This coastal location made it perfect for trade and fishing throughout its long history.

Bordeaux's importance. Bordeaux, the main city in Aquitaine, has been a vital port and administrative center for almost the entire history of the region. Its harbor made it a gateway for trade and communication with the wider world.
