Cool Facts
Math magician. Archimedes figured out how to find the area of circles, spheres, and spirals using clever tricks with tiny pieces and patterns. His methods were so advanced that they're basically the same ideas mathematicians use today, thousands of years later.
Invented clever machines. He designed pulleys, screws, and other gadgets that made heavy work easier. According to legend, he was so confident in his inventions that he claimed he could move the entire Earth if someone gave him the right tool.
Physics pioneer. Archimedes discovered how to figure out if a crown was really made of solid gold by using water displacement. He was so excited about this discovery that he supposedly ran through the streets shouting.
Geometry genius. He proved incredibly difficult math problems about the sizes and shapes of curved objects like spirals and domed surfaces. His proofs were so detailed and careful that scientists still study them as perfect examples of logical thinking.
Ancient superstar. Archimedes lived in Syracuse on the island of Sicily around 2,300 years ago and is remembered as one of the smartest people who ever lived. Even though we don't know many details about his everyday life, his ideas changed science forever.
