Gold found at last. Gold had been discovered in Australia before 1851, but the government kept it secret because they worried all the workers would leave their jobs to hunt for gold instead.

People came from everywhere. When the gold was officially announced, workers from all over Australia and people from other countries sailed to Australia, hoping to strike it rich and find their own golden treasure.

Life changed overnight. Whole towns popped up in the middle of nowhere as miners arrived with picks, shovels, and big dreams of finding enormous nuggets of gold buried in the ground.

Dreams of wealth. For many people, the gold rush was a chance to escape poverty and build a better future, though only some miners actually found enough gold to become rich.
