Temple capital of Asia. Bagan was the capital of the Pagan Kingdom, which was the very first kingdom to unite all the regions that would later become the country of Myanmar. It was super important in Asian history.
10,000 temples built. During the kingdom's golden age in the 11th and 13th centuries, people constructed more than 10,000 Buddhist temples, pagodas, and monasteries across the Bagan plains. That is an absolutely enormous amount of building.
Temples still standing today. Even though that was over 1,000 years ago, more than 2,200 temples and pagodas have survived to this day. You can still see and visit these incredible ancient structures.
World Heritage Site. Bagan is now protected as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, which means the world recognizes it as a super important place to preserve for future generations.
