Four Voice Roles. In barbershop music, each singer has a special job: the lead sings the main melody, the tenor adds high harmonies above it, the bass sings the lowest notes, and the baritone fills in the middle to complete the chord. Every note of the melody gets its own four-part chord underneath.

No Instruments Needed. Barbershop is a cappella, which means singers create all the music with their voices alone, with no guitars, pianos, or other instruments. This makes the blend of voices even more important and impressive.

Musical Tricks Called Snakes. Barbershop singers use special techniques called 'snakes' and 'swipes' where they shift one or more voices to change a chord in creative ways. This adds sparkle and variety to the music while keeping everything smooth and beautiful.

Flexible Voice Parts. While most barbershop songs use all four voices throughout, singers sometimes switch parts for a few moments to feature a particular singer or create a pretty effect. This keeps the style lively and interesting.
