Barbican

Extra strong gate. A barbican is a fortified tower or outpost that stands in front of a castle or city gate, acting as an extra layer of protection. Think of it like a bouncer at the front door of a fortress.

Guards the entrance. Barbicans were built over gates and bridges to make it much harder for enemies to break in. Soldiers could stand on top and defend the entrance from multiple angles.

Part of the walls. A barbican was usually positioned at the outer defense perimeter of a castle or city, creating a dangerous narrow space where attackers would get trapped. This extra wall meant enemies had to fight through two defenses instead of one.

Medieval invention. Barbicans were especially popular during the Middle Ages when castles ruled the land. They became a standard way for kings and lords to make their strongholds nearly impossible to attack.
