Barium

Soft and silvery. Barium is a metal that looks like silver and is soft enough that you could cut it with a knife. It's number 56 on the periodic table and hangs out in a special group called the alkaline earth metals.

Super reactive stuff. Barium is so eager to react with other elements that it's never found sitting by itself in nature. It's always bonded to something else, like it has to have friends to exist.

Group 2 member. Barium is part of a family called group 2 on the periodic table, which includes metals like calcium and magnesium that all act in similar ways.

Glowing in hospitals. One compound made from barium, called barium sulfate, helps doctors see inside your body during special X-ray scans. You drink it or they feed it through a tube, and it shows up bright white on the pictures.

Fireworks and more. Barium compounds make beautiful green colors in fireworks and special effects. They're also used in things like glass, ceramics, and paper to give them useful properties.
