Different types. Western and eastern honey bees are the main species that people keep in artificial beehives. These bees naturally live in colonies, which means they prefer living and working with lots of other bees.

Wild vs. home. In nature, bees sometimes build nests in hollow trees or exposed structures, but beekeepers build special hives to house colonies safely and make honey easier to collect.
