A mysterious witch. Befana is an old, witch-like woman from Italian folklore who nobody really knows where she came from. Scholars argue about whether she started as a pre-Christian goddess, a Christian character, or a mix of both.

Gifts on Epiphany Eve. Every year on the night before Epiphany (January 6th), Befana flies through the sky on her broomstick delivering presents to children all across Italy. Good kids get candy and toys, while naughty ones get coal or ash.

Chimney adventures. Befana enters homes through the chimney, just like Santa Claus, which is why she's always covered in soot and ash. She carries a big bag filled with treats and gifts for the children she visits.

Bonfires and effigies. In some parts of Italy, people celebrate Epiphany Eve by making dolls of Befana and burning them in bonfires as part of a special tradition. This adds to the mysterious and spooky fun around her character.

Loved and feared. Kids in Italy both love and fear Befana at the same time. She's exciting and magical, but also a little bit scary and mysterious, which makes her an unforgettable part of Italian Christmas traditions.
