Blue Jay

Striking blue plumage. Blue jays are dressed in brilliant blue feathers with a white chest and a fancy blue crest on their head. They have a distinctive black U-shaped collar around their neck that makes them look extra fancy.

Part of the smart corvid family. Blue jays belong to the Corvidae family, which includes some of the cleverest birds in the world like crows and ravens. This family is known for being intelligent problem-solvers.

Adaptable forest dwellers. Blue jays live in forests, but they're also super comfortable living in parks, gardens, and backyards near people. They thrive in both deciduous forests (with leaves that fall) and coniferous forests (with evergreen trees).

Eastern North American home. These birds are native to eastern North America and live across most of the eastern and central United States, southern Canada, and even Newfoundland. Some populations migrate while others stay put year-round.

Males and females look alike. Unlike many bird species, male and female blue jays have the same size and coloring, so it's hard to tell them apart just by looking. Their appearance also stays the same throughout the entire year.
