Stretches 550 miles. The Blue Ridge Mountains extend from southern Pennsylvania all the way down through seven states to Georgia, making it one of the longest mountain ranges in the eastern United States.
Blue hazy look. The mountains get their name from the bluish mist that hovers over them, created by plants releasing oils that scatter light in the sky.
Part of the Appalachians. The Blue Ridge is a special section of the much larger Appalachian Highlands, which is one of the oldest mountain ranges in North America.
Northern and southern regions. The Roanoke River gap divides the Blue Ridge into two distinct physiographic regions, each with its own unique features and geography.
