Blue Shark

Ocean nomad. Blue sharks migrate long distances across the Atlantic Ocean, sometimes traveling from New England all the way to South America. They are built for traveling, with long, pointed fins and a streamlined body.

Signature blue color. These sharks have beautiful deep blue coloring on their backs and white bellies. Their bright blue sides are what give them their name.

Medium-sized hunters. Blue sharks average around 10 feet long, making them much smaller than the famous great white shark. They hunt fish and squid in the deep, cooler parts of the ocean.

Choosy about temperature. Unlike many sharks that live in warm tropical waters, blue sharks prefer cooler ocean currents. This is why you'll find them in deeper, chillier parts of temperate seas.

Facing challenges. Blue sharks are listed as Near Threatened, meaning they are at risk due to overfishing. Many are caught accidentally in nets meant for other fish.
