Massive annual celebration. The Boryeong Mud Festival happens every summer on Daecheon Beach in South Korea, about 200 kilometers south of Seoul. By 2007, it was drawing 2.2 million visitors each year, making it one of the most popular festivals in the country.

Started in 1998. The festival began relatively recently, with the first Mud Festival held in 1998. Since then, it has grown to become a world-famous event that people travel from all over to attend.

Therapeutic mineral mud. The mud at Daecheon Beach is rich in minerals that people believe are good for their skin and health. Visitors cover themselves head to toe in the mud, wash off in the ocean, and leave feeling refreshed and relaxed.

Beach-based fun. The festival takes place right on Daecheon Beach, where people can enjoy the warm summer weather while playing in the mud and swimming in the ocean. It's a perfect combination of water and earth-based activities.
