Cool Facts
Your brain's lifeline. The brainstem connects the large upper part of your brain (the cerebrum) down to your spinal cord, like a thick stalk holding up a flower. It's where signals travel back and forth between your brain and the rest of your body.
Keeps you breathing. The medulla oblongata, which is the lowest part of the brainstem, controls automatic stuff like breathing and your heartbeat. You don't have to remember to breathe every second because this clever part does it for you.
Three main sections. The brainstem has three parts: the midbrain at the top, the pons in the middle, and the medulla oblongata at the bottom. Each part handles different important jobs, from eye movements to sleep to keeping your body balanced.
Speed and reflexes. The brainstem helps you react super fast without thinking, like when you blink when something comes toward your eye or pull your hand away from something hot. Messages zoom through here before your conscious brain even notices what happened.
