Packed with potential. A bud is like a sleeping package tucked onto a plant's stem or tucked into the corner where a leaf meets the branch. Inside this tiny bundle is a whole new shoot, ready to unfold into leaves, flowers, or more branches when the time is perfect.

Can stay dormant. Some buds don't rush to grow right away. They can sleep through winter or harsh times, waiting patiently until spring warmth or rain tells them it's safe to wake up and start growing.

Different jobs. Not all buds do the same thing. Some buds are programmed to make flowers, some to grow new stems and leaves, and some to create shorter, tighter shoots. Plants are really good at planning ahead!

Also happens in animals. In the zoology world, bud means something similar but different. Some sea creatures like hydra and certain worms can grow tiny buds on their bodies that pinch off and become completely new individuals, which is kind of like having a baby without needing two parents.
