Volcanic island chain. The Canary Islands are a group of islands in the Atlantic Ocean, located about 100 kilometers (60 miles) off the northwest coast of Africa. They were formed by volcanic activity, which shaped their dramatic landscapes.
Spanish territory. Even though they sit near Africa, the Canary Islands are the southernmost autonomous community of Spain. This means they belong to Spain but have their own regional government.
Millions of residents. Approximately 2.27 million people live on the Canary Islands, making it the most populous overseas special territory of the European Union. That's more people than many European countries!
Bridge between continents. Because the Canary Islands sit between Europe and Africa, they have a unique blend of Spanish culture mixed with African influences in their food, music, and traditions.
