Cool Facts
A real ship sailed the seas. HMS Challenger was a British naval vessel that traveled around the world for over four years, visiting oceans and collecting samples from places no scientist had explored before.
They found thousands of creatures. The expedition discovered so many new animals and plants living in the ocean that it changed everything scientists knew about sea life.
They invented oceanography. Before the Challenger, people didn't really study the ocean scientifically, but this expedition created the whole field of oceanography by measuring the water, collecting creatures, and mapping the ocean floor.
Scientists worked onboard. The ship carried naturalists and scientists who spent months carefully collecting and studying ocean samples to understand how the sea works.
