Hung and waiting. On Christmas Eve, children hang empty socks or sock-shaped bags hoping Santa will fill them with small treasures like toys, candy, fruit, and coins while they sleep.

From Saint Nicholas. The tradition comes from the life of Saint Nicholas, who inspired the Santa Claus legend and has been bringing joy to children for centuries.

Naughty or nice. In Western tradition, children who behave well get stockings full of goodies, but those who misbehave might find only coal inside as a playful warning.

Bedside or fireplace. Most stockings hang from the fireplace mantel, but some families place theirs by their bedposts so Santa can fill them right beside where the child sleeps.

Small or grand. Sometimes stocking stuffers are the only gifts a child receives, while in other homes they're extra surprises alongside wrapped presents under the tree.
