Giant tropical tree. Coconut palms grow near beaches and coasts in warm places all around the world. They belong to the palm family and are the only living tree in their special genus, which means they are totally unique.

Three layers of armor. The coconut fruit has a hard outer shell, a fibrous middle layer, and a hard brown seed inside. Inside that seed is delicious white flesh and coconut water that you can actually drink.

Ocean voyagers. Coconuts can float on ocean water for months without getting damaged, so they naturally drift from island to island. This is why coconut palms now grow on tropical beaches all over the world, even far from where they originally came from.

Originally from Asia. Coconuts first came from the Central Indo-Pacific region, which includes places like Indonesia and nearby areas. From there, they spread across the tropical world as the fruit floated on water and people carried them to new places.

Everything gets used. Coconuts are incredibly useful, people use the water for drinking, the white flesh for food, the shell for bowls and tools, and the fibers for making rope and mats.
