Waxy cores inside. Unlike regular graphite pencils, colored pencils have cores made from wax and oil mixed with colorful pigments, which is what makes them so bright and smooth to use.
Lots of color choices. Because the cores contain pigments and binding agents in different amounts, manufacturers can make colored pencils in tons of different colors and shades.
Water-soluble versions exist. Some colored pencils are special watercolor pencils that you can blend with water after drawing, creating beautiful paint-like effects on your paper.
Works with mechanical pencils too. You can even get colored cores made for mechanical pencils, so you can use the same click mechanism you might use for regular pencils but with colors.
