Cool Facts
New crops arrived. The Americas sent potatoes, corn, tomatoes, and chocolate across the ocean to Europe, Africa, and Asia. These foods became so important that billions of people today eat them every single day.
Animals crossed oceans. Horses, cows, pigs, and chickens traveled from Europe to the Americas, where they had never lived before. Native Americans had to learn completely new ways of hunting and farming because of these new animals.
Europe got new flavors. Peppers, vanilla, and cacao from the Americas changed how people in Europe, Africa, and Asia cooked and ate. Foods that seem totally normal to us now, like pizza with tomatoes, couldn't have existed before this exchange.
Diseases spread fast. Sadly, diseases from Europe, Africa, and Asia, like smallpox, spread to the Americas and made millions of Native Americans very sick. This was not on purpose, but it was one of the saddest parts of history.
The world became connected. The Columbian Exchange linked continents that had been separated for thousands of years and created the global trade and culture we see today.
