Dressed for show. Male Eurasian chaffinches are dressed up like little dandies with blue-grey caps and rust-red undersides, while females wear more muted browns and greys. Both sexes, though, show off two crisp white wing bars and white tail edges that flash when they fly.

Singers with style. Male chaffinches have powerful voices and love to sing from high, open perches where everyone can hear them. They use their strong songs to attract mates and let other birds know this is their territory.

Found far and wide. These small passerine birds from the finch family are common and widespread across Eurasia, making them one of the most familiar songbirds in their range. You can spot them in gardens, parks, and woodlands across Europe and beyond.
