Copies itself. A computer virus works like a biological virus by making copies of itself and inserting its code into other programs on your computer. Once it spreads to these other programs, those programs become infected too.

Needs your help. Unlike some malware, a computer virus can't spread on its own - it needs you to run an infected program or open a contaminated file before it can do anything. That's why it's called a virus, just like how you catch a cold from someone else.

Causes real damage. When a virus activates, it can delete your files, steal your information, slow down your computer, or make programs stop working properly. Some viruses are annoying but harmless, while others can cause serious problems.

Easy to prevent. You can protect yourself by not opening suspicious email attachments, downloading files only from trusted websites, and using antivirus software that watches for infected programs trying to sneak onto your computer.
