Born in Switzerland. Dada started in Zürich, Switzerland during World War I, when the world felt crazy and broken. Artists gathered there to make weird, rule-breaking art on purpose.

Rejected all rules. Dadaists said no to normal ideas about what art should look like or mean. They made nonsensical things, silly performances, and strange collages to shock people and make them think differently.

Hugo Ball's manifesto. Hugo Ball founded the movement and wrote the Dada Manifesto in 1916, which explained the group's wild ideas. This document became the rulebook for rejecting rules.

Spread everywhere fast. What started in Zürich quickly jumped to Berlin, Paris, New York City, and art centers across Europe and Asia. Artists everywhere loved the idea of breaking free from old traditions.

Changed art forever. Dada inspired later art movements like Surrealism, pop art, and Fluxus. Its rebellious spirit showed that art could be anything you imagined.
