Ancient goblet drum. The djembe is a rope-tuned, skin-covered drum shaped like a goblet that comes from Senegal and is played throughout West Africa. Players use their bare hands instead of sticks to create different sounds.

Name means peace. In the Bambara language of Mali, 'djembe' comes from a saying that means 'everyone gather together in peace.' The drum's name actually describes its purpose: bringing people together.

Community music maker. The djembe is meant to unite people through music and celebration. When someone plays a djembe, it's an invitation for everyone to come together and share in the rhythm.

Hands only. Unlike many drums that use sticks or mallets, djembes are always played with bare hands. This creates a warm, personal connection between the drummer and the drum's sound.
