Gradual transformation. Domesticated animals aren't created overnight. Over hundreds or thousands of years, living close to humans changed their genes, behavior, and even how they look. Some animals changed dramatically while others barely changed at all.

Selective breeding matters. Humans chose which animals to breed based on useful traits like being calm, productive, or strong. Over many generations, these chosen traits became more common in the population.

Not always improvement. People didn't always try to make animals better or more useful. Sometimes they just kept animals around for company, and sometimes domestication happened accidentally without anyone planning it.

No clear start date. There's no exact moment when a wild animal becomes domestic because the change happens so slowly across generations. Scientists study fossils and ancient remains to figure out when domestication probably started.

Different levels of taming. Some animals are fully domesticated like dogs and chickens. Others are semi-domesticated or captive-bred in farms but not truly domesticated because they haven't changed much from their wild cousins.
