Cool Facts
Movies in your mind. While you sleep, your brain automatically creates dreams that are like private movies just for you. These dreams can last anywhere from 5 to 20 minutes and feel super real even though they're not actually happening.
Two hours of dreaming. You spend more than two hours every single night dreaming. That means over a whole year, you're dreaming for hundreds of hours, even if you don't remember most of them when you wake up.
Your brain is active. Dreams happen during special sleep stages when your brain is buzzing with activity, even though your body is resting. During these times, your brain mixes up memories, feelings, and imagination into wild and wonderful stories.
Strange and surreal. Dreams can include impossible things like flying, talking animals, or being in two places at once. Your dreaming brain doesn't follow normal rules, which is why dreams feel so weird and wonderful.
Mystery of forgetting. You probably forget most of your dreams pretty quickly after waking up. Scientists think this happens because the chemicals your brain uses while dreaming are different from when you're awake.
