Massive bite force. Dunkleosteus had jaws that could snap shut with incredible power, making it one of the first apex predators to dominate its ecosystem. Its bite was feared by other creatures in the sea.

Armored head and neck. This fish had thick bony plates covering its head and a special jointed neck that let it move in surprising ways. The armor protected it from other predators and helped it hunt.

Lived in open waters. Dunkleosteus swam in the open ocean during the Late Devonian period, about 382 to 358 million years ago. It was truly an ocean wanderer of its time.

Fossils found worldwide. Scientists have discovered Dunkleosteus fossils in the United States, Canada, Poland, Belgium, and Morocco, showing how widespread these fish were across ancient seas.

Early apex predator. Dunkleosteus was one of the very first vertebrates to be at the top of the food chain, ruling its domain long before dinosaurs ever existed on land.
