Thousands of years old. People have been embroidering fabric since ancient times, making it one of the oldest forms of art. Cultures all around the world developed their own embroidery styles and techniques.

Stitches tell the story. Different stitches create different effects: chain stitch makes a loopy line, cross stitch forms little X patterns, satin stitch fills in areas with smooth thread, and running stitch is the simplest one of all. Each stitch has its own special look and purpose.

Hand and machines. For thousands of years, people stitched embroidery by hand with needles, but today machines can create embroidery too. Machine embroidery can work much faster, though hand embroidery stays popular because it feels special and personal.

Decorating everything. Embroidery isn't just for pictures on fabric. People embroider clothes, blankets, pillows, bags, and more to make them beautiful and unique. A single embroidered design can take hours or even weeks to complete.
