Ancient Chinese Violin. The erhu is sometimes called a Chinese violin, but it only has two strings instead of four and sounds quite different. It has a unique, soaring voice that can express deep emotions.

Played With A Bow. Musicians use a bow to play the erhu, similar to a violin, but they hold the instrument vertically and rest it on their leg. The bow is held between the two strings, not outside them like a violin.

Part Of A Family. The erhu is the most popular member of the huqin family, which are traditional bowed instruments used across China. Many different ethnic groups in China have their own versions of huqin instruments.

Old And New Music. For centuries, the erhu has been used in traditional Chinese orchestras and folk music, but today musicians also play it in pop, rock, and jazz arrangements. It's incredibly versatile and works well in both ancient and modern styles.

Solo Star. The erhu can be both a solo performer taking the spotlight in a concert or a supporting voice blending into an ensemble or large orchestra. It's skilled enough to handle the most important musical parts.
