Music from Lisbon. Fado is a special style of music that started in Lisbon, Portugal, around the 1820s. It became known for its emotional, heartfelt way of telling stories through song.

Very old roots. While we know for sure that fado existed in the 1820s and 1830s, it probably has even older origins that go back further in Portuguese history. The true beginnings are lost to time because people passed down the stories by talking about them, not writing them down.

Stories passed along. Most of what we know about fado's early history came from people telling stories to each other across generations. However, these stories changed a little bit each time they were told, kind of like the telephone game, so we can't be totally sure exactly how it all started.

Deep emotions. Fado music is famous for expressing deep, powerful feelings like sadness, love, and longing. It became the voice of people sharing their most personal and meaningful experiences through song.
