Frederick Douglass

Born enslaved. Frederick Douglass was born into slavery in Maryland around 1818. Despite laws that made it illegal to teach enslaved people to read, he taught himself and became one of the most educated people of his time.

Escaped to freedom. In 1838, Douglass escaped from slavery and fled north to New York, changing his last name to stay hidden from those who wanted to capture him and send him back.

Powerful speaker. Douglass became famous for giving speeches about the horrors of slavery and why all people deserved freedom and equal rights. His words convinced thousands of people to join the fight against slavery.

Published his story. He wrote a bestselling autobiography called 'Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass, an American Slave,' which told the true story of his life and inspired many people to oppose slavery.

Served his country. After slavery ended, Douglass held important government positions, including being a U.S. Ambassador, and continued speaking out for equality and justice for all Americans.
