Two counterbalanced cars. A funicular has two carriages attached to opposite ends of a cable, so when one goes up the mountain, the other comes down at the same speed. This balance makes the system work smoothly without needing huge amounts of power.
Built for steep slopes. Funiculars are designed specifically for mountains and hills that are too steep for regular trains. They make it possible for people to travel safely up and down these dramatic slopes.
Cable loops over pulley. The cable runs over a large pulley wheel at the top of the track, kind of like a rope over a tree branch. As the cable moves, it pulls one carriage up while letting the other carriage down in perfect balance.
Moving at same speed. Both carriages move synchronously, which means they travel at identical speeds in opposite directions. This synchronized movement sets funiculars apart from other cable systems that might move one car at a time.
Quick mountain transport. Funiculars solve a real problem: they let people reach steep mountaintop destinations quickly and safely. Many famous scenic areas use funiculars to carry thousands of visitors up and down each day.
