Military commander. George Washington led the Continental Army during the American Revolutionary War, fighting against the powerful British Empire to help America win independence.

First president. After the war ended, Washington became the first president of the United States and served for eight years, from 1789 to 1797.

Father of His Country. People call Washington the Father of His Country because his leadership was so important in creating the United States as an independent nation.

Brought unity. Washington helped bring together the thirteen original states to work as one country, even when they didn't always agree with each other.
