Cool Facts
Wings create lift. Flying animals have special appendages like wings that push against air to create an invisible force called lift, which lets them rise up and stay in the sky even though gravity is pulling them down.
Gliding is clever skydiving. Some animals, like flying squirrels and flying lizards, can't truly fly but they can glide by stretching out flaps of skin or special membranes, which lets them jump from trees and drift through the air instead of falling straight down.
Flying fish leap out. Flying fish are the only aquatic animals in this group, and they can burst out of the water and glide through the air for short distances to escape hungry predators below.
Ballooning spiders float. Baby spiders sometimes use a rare trick called ballooning where they release silk threads that catch the wind like tiny parachutes, letting them drift through the air to find new homes.
Bats are master fliers. Unlike birds, bats are mammals that evolved actual powered flight, and they can twist their wings in ways birds can't, making them super agile hunters in the sky at night.
