Ancient Greek roots. The word gym comes from the ancient Greek word gymnasion. In ancient Greece, gymnasiums were places where young men trained for sports and competitions.
Many sports inside. Modern gyms often have indoor courts for basketball, hockey, tennis, boxing, and wrestling. These courts let people play sports no matter what the weather is like outside.
