Tiny patch of sky. The Hubble Deep Field shows an area about 2.6 arcminutes on a side, which is roughly the size of a tennis ball viewed from 100 metres away. It represents only one 24-millionth of the entire sky.
Thousands of galaxies. In this small region, astronomers discovered thousands of galaxies of different shapes, sizes, and colors. Many were so far away their light had been traveling for billions of years to reach us.
342 separate pictures. The image was created by stacking 342 different exposures taken over ten consecutive days in December 1995. Each exposure captured more detail and light from these distant objects.
Located in Ursa Major. The Hubble Deep Field focuses on a small region in the constellation Ursa Major, the same area where the Big Dipper asterism is located.
