Hummingbird Hawk-Moth

Looks like a bird. This moth has a long, thin mouth called a proboscis that it uses to sip nectar from flowers, just like a hummingbird does. It even hovers in the air while feeding, making it nearly impossible to tell apart from an actual hummingbird at first glance.

Found across Eurasia. The hummingbird hawk-moth lives in temperate regions throughout Europe, Asia, and nearby areas. It thrives in places with plenty of tube-shaped flowers to feed on.

Convergent evolution. The hummingbird hawk-moth and actual hummingbirds evolved their similar looks and behaviors completely separately, both solving the same problem in nature. This incredible similarity shows how different animals can develop the same amazing features when they face the same challenges.

Fast wings, fast moves. Like hummingbirds, this moth's wings beat incredibly rapidly, allowing it to hover perfectly still and dart around flowers with amazing speed and control.
