Independence Day (Fourth of July)

The Declaration of Independence. This is the document that announced America wanted to be free from British rule. It was officially adopted on July 4, 1776, which is why Americans celebrate on that day every year.

Fireworks everywhere. On Independence Day, cities and towns across America light up the sky with fireworks to celebrate the birthday of the United States. The explosions of color remind people of the rockets used during battles.

A federal holiday. Independence Day is an official day off for most Americans, meaning schools and businesses close so people can celebrate together with parades, barbecues, and family gatherings.

Freedom from a king. Before 1776, America was ruled by the British King, George III. The Declaration said Americans no longer wanted a king deciding their rules and wanted to create their own government instead.

America's birthday. Many people call Independence Day 'America's birthday' because it marks the day the United States was officially born as its own nation separate from Britain.
