Official Money of India. The Indian rupee is the currency that people in India use to buy things, pay for services, and save their money. It's the money system that grew out of the time when India was part of the British Raj.
Controlled by the RBI. The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) is the government organization in charge of making and managing all the Indian rupees in the country. The RBI got this important job from a special law called the Reserve Bank of India Act from 1934.
Split into Paise. One rupee is worth 100 paise, which is like how one dollar is worth 100 cents. Paise are the smaller coins and units of Indian money.
Traded Worldwide. The Indian rupee is the eleventh-most-traded currency in the entire world as of April 2025. This means people and businesses all over the planet buy and sell rupees every single day.
