Tomatoes changed everything. When explorers brought tomatoes from the Americas to Italy in the 1500s, Italian cooks fell in love with them. Now tomatoes are so important to Italian food that many people think they've always been there, but Italy didn't have them for thousands of years!
Ancient Roman roots. Italian cooking started way back when the Romans ruled, over 2,000 years ago. The recipes and cooking tricks from that time period are still part of how Italians cook today.
Spread around the world. When Italian families moved to other countries, especially to America, they brought their recipes with them. Now Italian restaurants and pizza shops are everywhere, making it one of the most loved cuisines on Earth.
New World ingredients. Potatoes, corn, peppers, and sugar beets all came from the Americas and completely changed how Italians cooked. These ingredients mixed with their old traditional recipes to create the Italian food we know today.
UNESCO recognized. In 2025, the United Nations decided that Italian cuisine is so special and important to human culture that they listed it as intangible cultural heritage, which is like getting the world's highest honor for a way of cooking.
