Germ-killing surgeon. Joseph Lister discovered that if doctors cleaned their tools and kept surgery areas free of germs, patients stopped dying from infections. Before his idea, more people died from infected wounds after surgery than from the surgery itself.

Carbolic acid solution. Lister used a chemical called carbolic acid to spray on wounds and surgical instruments, killing the invisible germs that caused dangerous infections. This simple practice saved countless lives.

Changed how doctors work. Lister's antiseptic methods became the foundation of modern surgery and medicine. Today, keeping things clean and germ-free during medical procedures is so basic that we barely think about it, but Lister had to convince stubborn doctors it actually worked.

Pioneer and fighter. Many doctors at first refused to believe Lister's ideas because they couldn't see germs with their own eyes. But Lister proved his methods worked by showing that his patients survived at much higher rates than others.

A careful observer. Like the great surgeon John Hunter before him, Lister used close observation and science instead of just tradition to figure out how to do medicine better.
