Ancient imperial capital. For over 1,000 years, Kyoto was the home of Japan's emperors and the center of Japanese culture, art, and learning. Even though the government moved to Tokyo in 1868, Kyoto kept its special importance.

Temple city. Kyoto has more than 2,000 temples and shrines tucked into its neighborhoods and hillsides. Visiting these sacred places, many with beautiful gardens and old wooden buildings, is like stepping back in time.

Traditional crafts alive. Kyoto is still the heart of Japanese traditional arts like silk weaving, pottery, and tea ceremony. You can visit workshops where artisans have been perfecting the same crafts for hundreds of years.

Garden paradise. The city is famous for its incredible gardens, where every stone, tree, and pond is carefully placed to create peaceful, beautiful spaces. Cherry blossoms in spring and red leaves in fall make Kyoto absolutely magical.

Over 1 million people. About 1.46 million people live in Kyoto, making it Japan's ninth-largest city. It's a bustling modern place that somehow keeps its ancient traditions alive at the same time.
